John Burns MBE BVMS MRCVS was a local lad. His career started on a small dairy farm in Ayrshire which led him into the world of veterinary medicine. While working in a general practice in Llanelli he found that drugs used to treat itchy skin and bad ears didn't have a lasting effect. He thought these ailments could be helped with a holistic approach and, as such, believed that feeding cats and dogs a homecooked diet of brown rice, vegetables and meat instead of commercial pet food could help these pets.
Back in the 1980s though people didn't have time or inclination to faithfully cook their pets food so John decided he'd look into producing a commercial pet food of his own. In 1993 he launched Burns Pet Nutrition and now, cue 30 years!!
Over the past 30 years Burns has grown from strength to strength business wise but it's more than merely a pet food company.
If you look at their website www.burnspet.co.uk you will be amazed at what they do. For several years now Burns have sponsored Islay Dog-Rescue and supplied us with food every month for our dogs. They also supply beautiful adoption packs for our adopters.
They have supported us when we have run dog shows etc and they are very well known for "giving back" to the doggy community.
This year marks their 30 year anniversary. What an achievement. Not only have they grown their business but the quality of their pet food is second to none, they support rescues, working dogs, the agility world, trainers, search and rescue teams across the UK. In all honesty, I don't know of another company who gives back as much and has such a strong ethics base.
To conclude, all at Islay Dog Rescue would like to wish Burns Pet Nutrition the most heart-felt congratulations on their 30 year anniversary.
We cannot begin to thank you all enough for your support. Not only are you restoring our faith in human nature but you are directly responsible for helping us save dogs' lives.
